ENERGY INDEPENDENCE…America’s future depends on it ! Why are these men smiling? We’re not!
Secure energy sources make America secure. 98% of the American transportation runs on oil. Nearly 70% of that oil is imported. We have allowed our energy supplies to grow more tenuous since the first Oil Crisis of 1973 when foreign oil reliance was 24%. Have we not learned; unreliable fuel sources jeopardize American security and the American Economy?
-
America’s expenditures on foreign oil are 150% of our National Defense Budget.
-
The OPEC cartel controls global oil pricing by controlling global supply. OPEC has 70% of the world’s oil reserves, yet the cartel provides only 40% of world oil production, essentially unchanged since 1977.
-
OPEC has used oil as an economic weapon before. On August 4, 2008 Iran threatened closure of the Straits of Hormuz “easily and on an unlimited basis”. Analysts predicted $300 per barrel oil in such an event.
-
The US is 5% of the world’s population, controls 3% of the world’s oil reserves, yet uses an unsustainable 25% of the world annual oil production.
-
High priced oil hurts not just at the pump. World food prices have escalated dramatically due to associated cost of petroleum in fertilizers, production, harvesting, processing and transportation.
-
High priced oil cripples America’s economy. Between November 2007 and June 2008 Americans drove 53.2 billion fewer miles than they did over the same eight-month period a year earlier. That's a larger decline than the 49.3 billion fewer miles driven by Americans over the entire decade of the 1970s, a period marked by oil embargoes and gas lines.
You can help Safeguard America’s future:
1) Write your Senators and Congressman to cosponsor S 3303/hr6559 The Open Fuel Standard to “break Oil’s monopoly of liquid fuel for transportation through a rapid phase in of Flex Fuel vehicles capable running on, in any combination, ethanol, methanol or gasoline and eliminate the use of oil and oil wealth as a strategic weapon.” The technology exists, is proven, is scalable and can be incorporated in new automobiles at $100 – 200 per vehicle. Flex Fuel technology has already helped Brazil achieve energy independence.
